Econthon | Inter University Economics Competition
Bangladesh, an emerging developing nation is undergoing many transitions: economic, epidemiological, demographic, technological and social. The world economy too is evolving, with technological progress, economic crises and social upheavals demanding more and alternative economic analyses. Both these factors make it imperative for economists in Bangladesh, to focus on economic research and its dissemination. Bearing this in mind UIUJEF is launching an Inter university competition named ‘ECONTHON’ during the Fall trimester of 2017, which will deal with issues relating to various economic problems, finding their solutions and ways to implement them. The purpose of conducting this competition is to provide a platform where young economists can convey their ideas and voice their opinions.
It is going to be a two day event comprising of three rounds. There will be a selection round held before the main event.
The first day of the event will include rounds 1 and 2. The second day will begin with round 3 and conclude with an award giving ceremony.
A workshop will be held prior the competition which will help the participants to understand the guidelines of the competition. We plan on bringing reputed academicians to conduct the workshop and inspire the students to come up with brilliant solutions to alleviate the problems.
Format of the competition:
The idea behind the name ECONTHON is generated from the term ‘marathon’ and will follow the format of one. The rounds or as we will call them ‘levels’ will be a step up the ladder to the finale. All teams passing level 0 will play the next three levels and there will be no further elimination!
The teams will be evaluated on their performance on each level and score points accordingly. As the teams pass each level, their scores will be added to that of the proceeding level and at the end the top 3 teams will gain position as 1st, 2nd and 3rd. But the game will not end there… separate awards will be given out to individuals based on certain categories. So a member from a team that could not be among one of the top 3 teams will still have a chance to achieve an award! Individual awards will include 10 categories such as best presenter, best policy maker, best debater etc.
